Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Big Team Golf
How does the weighting system work?
Each player's weighting is calculated using their average score and average birdies per round over their last 20 rounds. This creates a real-time picture of how they're currently playing. The exact formula is proprietary, but the result is a single number that represents a player's current form.
When you run teams, the app balances total team weightings to create the fairest possible matchup.
Why not just use handicaps?
Handicaps are great for individual stroke play, but they have problems for team selection:
- Sandbagging: Players can manipulate their handicap by posting selective scores
- Outdated data: Handicaps often reflect how someone played months ago, not today
- Different formats: Our system uses gross scores and birdies, which better reflect team play performance
Big Team Golf uses actual, recent performance data that can't be manipulated.
Is there an Android version?
Currently, Big Team Golf is available only on iOS (iPhone). However, if some members of your group have Android phones, they can still be added to your club as non-app users. An admin can add them manually and enter their scores after each round.
An Android version is on our roadmap for the future.
How many players can be in a club?
When you create a club, you choose an initial member capacity. If your club grows beyond that limit, you can increase capacity from the admin tab:
- Add 10 members: $1.99 one-time
- Add 50 members: $4.99 one-time
If you need a larger custom capacity, contact us at info@bigteamgolf.com.
What if someone doesn't want to download the app?
No problem. Only one person in your group technically needs the app to run teams. Admins can add non-app users manually, enter their scores, and include them in team generation. They just won't be able to view teams or stats on their own device.
How long until weightings are accurate?
The weighting uses the last 20 rounds, so it takes time to stabilize for new players. In our experience:
- After 5-8 rounds: Weightings start to normalize
- After 15-20 rounds: Weightings are fully accurate
For new clubs, you have a few options: use handicaps for the first round, manually enter estimated scores, or run parallel teams while building your database.
Can I be in multiple clubs?
Yes! That's what our tier system is for:
- Par Tier ($0.99/mo): 1 club
- Birdie Tier ($1.99/mo): Up to 3 clubs
- Eagle Tier ($2.99/mo): Up to 10 clubs
If you play at multiple courses or are part of different groups, higher tiers let you maintain separate weightings for each.
What if I need to move a player to a different team?
After running teams, you can manually move any player. This is useful when certain players need to be together (like a guest playing with the member who invited them) or apart.
Pro tip: When moving players, try to swap with someone of similar weighting on another team to maintain balance.
Our course doesn't allow 5-somes. How do we generate teams?
By default, the app creates the fewest number of teams with up to 5 players each. After running teams, increase the number of teams to cap each at 4 players (or fewer). The app will rebalance automatically.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through the App Store. To cancel:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Find Big Team Golf and tap Cancel Subscription
Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.
My group plays at different courses. Does that matter?
Since Big Team Golf uses average score and birdies per round, course difficulty can skew weightings. If your group rotates between courses, consider creating a separate club for each course with its own player weightings.
I want to change the tees I normally play. Will that affect my weighting?
Yes. Moving to different tees impacts both your score and birdie average. As a rough guide: moving up one tee typically decreases average score by 2 strokes and increases birdie average by 1 (opposite for moving back). An admin can create a new player profile reflecting the tee change to keep weightings accurate.
Why is my weight changing so much from round to round?
When you have fewer than 20 rounds entered, each individual round carries more influence, causing larger fluctuations. As you accumulate more rounds, your weighting will stabilize.
Can I play a 9-hole match with fair teams?
Yes, but don't enter scores for 9-hole rounds. Use the team selector to run teams as normal, but skip creating a match afterward. Scores should only be entered for full 18-hole rounds to keep weightings accurate.
